What kind of experience is it like to be the head of product manager at Angry Birds developer Rovio
The birth of an excellent game is inseparable from the hard work and dedication of workers in various positions. Pocket Gamer recently planned a series of interviews to discuss their knowledge and experience of the game industry and their positions from the perspectives of outstanding representatives of multiple positions. The subject of this interview is Michail Katkoff , the director of product manager for “Angry Birds” developer Rovio . The following is the compiled content of the Voice of Game editor:
Michail Katkoff : Like many people, I have always liked games. My entire childhood was basically spent playing games. At that time, I was still a fleshy fat boy… Although I was passionate about games, I eventually went to a business school. I never thought I had One day will become a member of the game maker.
Fortunately, the game “Happy Farm” suddenly became popular in 2009 . Suddenly, the nascent F2P gaming industry began to need people with business acumen like me to join it.
I seized this opportunity and joined the Helsinki studio of Digital Chocolate (Note: a game company that was a smash hit in the Nokia era) and became one of the company’s earliest PMs . Since then, I finally realized my dream of becoming a part of the game industry.
Q: What is your specific job as a product manager at Rovio ?
Michail Katkoff : MyworkinRovio is divided into two parts. First and foremost, I am participating in the development of a game, which is still in its early stages. Of course, our goal is to create an enduring hit work.
My second job is to control and improve the company’s product management as a whole. In other words, I want the game development team to be able to get any support they need; we want to ensure that there are enough product managers; these product managers must be competent for their positions.
Q: Have you ever imagined that you would be engaged in such a job?
Michail Katkoff : I have had the opportunity to hire product managers and train them before, and I am pleased with their bright career development trajectory.
My answer to your question is yes. I love making games, and I also love to share my knowledge and witness the success of others. Now this job can kill two birds with one stone.
Q: Part of your new mission at Rovio is to “help establish company-wide effective product management principles.” What do you think are the core principles?
Michail Katkoff : Asthe product manager ofF2Pgames, his specific roles and functions are very different, sometimes completely different.
Sometimes, people hope that the product manager is a business communicator proficient in analysis; sometimes, people hope that the product manager can come up with creative solutions without being constrained by the inertia of thinking.
Product managers rarely directly participate in the production and operation of games, but allow employees in other positions to better complete their work. In my opinion, product management has four core principles :
1. Set goals: Give priority to game development, so as to maximize the benefits of the work of the entire team .
2. Find and analyze problems: Use data to find problems, and convene a team to solve them .
3. Communicate with stakeholders: The product manager is the hub that connects the development team with the outside world .
4. Provide benchmarks: provide the team with accurate and deconstructed possible solutions, and keep an eye on the information of competitors .
Q: What is the specific role of the current mobile game product manager? What makes an excellent mobile game product manager?
Michail Katkoff : As I said before, the role of the product manager varies widely according to the different stages of game development and whether you are an internal or external member of the team.
But overall, a good mobile game product manager should possess the above four core principles and have a passion for mobile games. In addition, I will give a keynote speech at this year’s GDC to share more experience, and welcome everyone to attend the exchange.
Q: When you first joined the industry, was there anything that you desperately wanted to know?
Michail Katkoff : Of course there is! Every day I feel that I don’t know enough . The mobile game industry is changing rapidly, and it is almost impossible for you to keep up with the hot spots of the industry at any time, not to mention that you can always successfully predict the future trend.
I was fortunate to join a very good studio when I first entered the industry, with enough space to try, fail and learn.
If I first entered the game industry, what I most want to know is the game production process, the roles and responsibilities of each post.
In other words, what everyone is doing, what are the stages of game product development, and the deliverables of each stage. Once I understand the relevant knowledge of game development, I no longer feel so boring.
Q: For people who want to become product managers, what other advice do you offer?
Michail Katkoff : Find more similar positions as game product managers, play more different types of games, and be prepared for interviews. Check out some blogs about product management, such asMobile Free-to-Play,Mobile Dev MemoandDeconstructor of Fun. You can learn a lot of good information in these places.
If you are passionate about both gaming and business, product manager will be your best career choice. You will work with highly creative and analytical people.
Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to create great games with tens of millions of players around the world .
