According to a number of environmental organizations, the reduction in industrial production and freight traffic caused by the coronavirus pandemic has led to an improvement in the environmental situation in several regions of the world. Nevertheless, the UN expects that the restoration of economic activity after the crisis can return environmental pollution to previous levels. Therefore, the Organization is considering ways to reduce the negative impact of freight traffic on nature. One of them, according to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), maybe the diversification of transport on inland waterways.

According to statistics obtained from 42 countries, in 2018 this mode of transport transported only a little more than 3 percent of cargo, while by rail – 32 percent, and by road – almost 65 percent. At the same time, the degree of use of inland water transport differs significantly from country to country: in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, France and Croatia, the share of freight transport on inland waterways is less than 10 percent, while in Bulgaria, Germany, Romania, and Serbia it exceeds 10 percent, and in the Netherlands is approaching 40.

The UN invites the countries of the region to think about the development of water transport, which, in comparison with the rest, is more economically advantageous and safer from an environmental point of view. According to the Economic Commission for Europe, in the last decade, there has been a tendency to increase the size of ships while reducing their number. At the same time, the gross tonnage of the fleet operated on European inland waterways is growing. Modernization of the fleet and infrastructure, expansion of the network of cargo transportation routes will not only create new jobs but also ensure sustainable development of the transport industry, the UNECE is confident.
