Russian President Vladimir Putin, a move by allies of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, has signed on Friday legislation that prohibits the members of “extremist” organizations from going out for office this year.

Days before a tribunal would consider outlawing Navalny’s anti-corruption foundation and regional campaign groups on grounds that they are extreme, Putin’s bill approval has come.

 

The Act forbids members or group leaders who proclaim themselves extremists, ranging from three to five-year terms for sitting in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, to other elections.

 

The law significantly derails parliamentary campaigns planned by some Navalny allies, such Lyubov Sobol, who are prosecuted for an opposition politician protest.

 

Putin’s signature marks Navalny’s 45th birthday behind bars as he serves a 2.5-year term of misuse, which he believes is fabricated.

 

The team of Navalny – who claim extremism is an attempt to weaken their opposition political opposition during the September legislative elections – jokingly remarked the law was a “special welcome from the Kremlin on a birthday.”

 

Navalny claimed in a message on his account on Instagram that he had to celebrate in prison his birthday, and that when he was released, he would commemorate all his missed birthdays.

By publicly declaring the Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation and the radical regional organizations, Russia would obtain the authority to arrest activists and freeze bank accounts. The next hearing in the case will take place on 9 June.

 

Navalny’s allies were led to disintegrate the regional organizations in this case.
