The opposition leader in Israel came closer to unseated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by declaring an agreement to establish a new government with a coalition of various political allies.

But the fragile alliance, commanding a slim parliamentary majority, would be sworn in only about ten to twelve days, giving Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-served leader, little space to attempt to rally legislators against it.

Centrist lawmaker Yair Lapid told Reuven Rivlin, in an email approximately 35 minutes prior to a midnight Wednesday time limit: “I am honoured to inform you that I have managed to build a government.”

Under the Coalition Pact, the former Defense Minister and high-tech Millionaire, Naftali Bennett, 49, would become prime minister and, in approximately two years, give the post to Lapid, 57, a previous host of TV and finance ministers.

The agreement closed the elections on March 23, when either the left-wing Likud party of Netanyahu and its supporters or their opponents did not obtain a majority in the parliamentary term. In two years, it was Israel’s fourth national vote.

The alliance includes an amalgamation of small and medium-sized political parties, including the 21% Arab minority, the United Arab List, for the first time in Israel’s history.

They have little else in common except a desire to expel Netanyahu, who has been closed down by a trial of corruption accusations for 12 years as prime minister.

The line-up consists of Bennett’s Yamina, Blue and White, Centre-left and Defense Minister Benny Gantz, left Meretz and the Labor Parties, Yisrael Beitenu Party (former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman) and New Hope, a former right-wing party led by Gideon Saar, former Likud education Minister.
