– Germany announced on Sunday that it has discovered three instances of the novel Omicron coronavirus strain, after the confirmation of suspected infection in the western state of Hesse.

“Sequencing has verified the findings – the suspected case that was made public yesterday morning is the Omicron variation,” Kai Klose, the state of Hesse’s Social Affairs Minister, tweeted.

He added on Saturday that an Omicron case had been discovered in a traveler arriving from South Africa in Hesse, which is home to Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s busiest airports.

Health officials in Bavaria’s southern state discovered two cases of the Omicron strain on Saturday.

After being categorized as a virus-variant region, restrictions on aviation travel from South Africa went into place on Sunday. This means that only Germans may fly from South Africa to Germany, and even those who have been vaccinated must spend 14 days in quarantine.

The new version has alarmed Germany, which, like many other European nations, is dealing with a fourth wave of the COVID-19 crisis, which has resulted in an increase in coronavirus infections.
