Coburn sailed to an Automatic Steeplechase Finale in Saturday’s preliminary rounds while former buffs runner Valerie Constien made her Olympic debut and utilised a strong demonstration to claim one of the big slots for the heat of the finals.

On Wednesday morning, 5 a.m. MT, Coburn and Constien will participate in the Championship Heat.

Coburn is ranked third in the opening heat with a time of 9 minutes, 16.91 seconds, alongside the top three finishers in each one of the 3 heats, who get automatic spots for the final round. Coburn’s bronze medal was the first medal earned in the steeplechase by an American woman in 2016.

Constien finished fourth in his third heat, but his time of 9:24.31 was good enough to finish one of the six big slots for the final on Wednesday.

All three Americans will play in the heat championship, with Courtney Frerichs winning the second heat at 9.19.34.
