Lithuania, an EU member, has reported an increase in unlawful border crossings from Belarus, accusing Minsk of flying in migrants from other countries and transferring them across the border.

“The EU will evaluate the prospect of restrictive measures aimed at migrant smugglers who violate human rights or those who are otherwise complicit in human trafficking,” Josep Borrell said in a statement on Belarus on Friday.

Belarus was accused by Lithuania and the EU earlier this month of using migrants and refugees as a political tool to exert pressure on the EU over Minsk’s sanctions.

“Those who have no legal right to remain in the EU will be deported. The EU and its member states will take all necessary measures in this regard, in accordance with EU and international law “According to Borrell, the EU and its member states have already strengthened support for securing the bloc’s borders.

This month, Lithuania began construction on a 550-kilometer (320-mile) razor-wire fence along its border with Belarus.

Since a disputed presidential election last August, which was followed by a police crackdown on public rallies, Brussels has slapped a series of sanctions on Belarus.
