The group of 13 islands contains three of Greece’s most famous tourist destinations: Mykonos, Santorini, and Rhodes, which together attract millions of visitors every summer.

Later on Thursday, Nikos Hardalias, the Greek Deputy Civil Protection Minister, claimed Mykonos and Ios, another famous tourist destination, were “one step” away from authorities implementing restrictions.

He said that the situation in the islands of Zakynthos, Tinos, Lefkada, Santorini, Paros, and Rhodes was equally concerning.

Greece, which is highly reliant on tourism, had hoped to resurrect the sector by marketing “COVID-free” islands this summer, expecting that a recovery in foreign visitation would revive the industry following its worst year in decades in 2020.

Despite a good June in terms of arrivals and optimistic statements from ministers and tourism authorities, the season’s outcome remains unclear. find out more

“We’re waiting to see how the (tourist) markets respond,” said Manolis Markopoulos, head of the Rhodes Hoteliers Association, in response to the ECDC’s decision. More than 90% of visitors to the island come from other countries.

Germany, which classified Greece as a coronavirus risk region earlier this month, and the United Kingdom, which puts Greece on its “amber” list of nations that require returning travelers to quarantine at home, are typically the largest suppliers of tourists to Greece.

The dark red zones on the ECDC map help identify very high-risk regions while also assisting EU member states in enforcing regulations mandating testing before to travel and quarantine upon return.

Crete, Greece’s largest island and another major tourist destination, was demoted to the dark red zone by the ECDC last week.
