The 15-year-old Raducanu, who won the tournament at Flushing Meadows as a 150th-ranked qualifier last year, put up a commanding performance against Williams, winning 6-4 6-0 in just over an hour.
Prior to being eliminated early from the Canadian Open, American Williams revealed her impending retirement last week, claiming that she was “growing away from tennis.” Romanian Raducanu called being paired with Williams a “gift.”
The opportunity to portray her “may be one of the last times I get to do so,” added Raducanu. You must treasure the occasion since you will remember it for the rest of your professional life.
Raducanu claimed that the opponent was consistently of a high calibre at this level. She told reporters, “Obviously, I’m incredibly proud of myself for beating Serena and winning. It gives me confidence [ahead of the US Open].
“No matter what level you’re playing at, each of those victories helped you feel more confident. But this one obviously more so because you’re playing so superbly. But right now, I’m not aiming to get too high or too low.”
