Most recipients’ COVID-19 vaccine-induced antibodies fell below a critical threshold six months after their second dosage, while a third injection had a substantial booster effect, lab research found.

In an unpeer reviewed publication released on Sunday, Chinese researchers revealed findings from a study of blood samples from healthy people aged 18-59.

Six months following the second shot, only 16.9% and 35.2% of people who got two doses two or four weeks apart had neutralising antibodies above a detectable threshold level, the report stated.

The readings were based on data from two cohorts of over 50 individuals each, with 540 subjects receiving either a third dose of the vaccination or a placebo.

Scientists are still unsure how the drop in antibodies may influence the vaccine’s efficacy.

“The present two-dose CoronaVac regimen should be the focus in the short-to-medium term,” the study added.

Concerns about the Sinovac vaccine’s efficacy against the more transmissible Delta form of the coronavirus led Indonesia and Thailand to agree to offer certain patients a third injection from Moderna or Pfizer.

Some Sinovac patients in Turkey were being offered a third Sinovac or Pfizer dosage.

Sinovac has supplied over 1 billion doses of the vaccine, which is used in China, Brazil, Indonesia, and Chile.

The Philippines’ Health Secretary said on Tuesday that the country’s vaccination expert council has not yet recommended a booster injection, but experts are considering it.

Researchers found that subjects who received a third Sinovac shot six months after the second had 3-5 times higher antibody levels after 28 days than those who had the second shot four weeks earlier.

Research on antibody duration after a third shot is needed, as the study did not test the antibodies against more transmissible variations.

Researchers from Jiangsu province, Sinovac, and other Chinese organizations performed the study.
